Dear Parrot Lover,
Do you know how to give your bird the best care possible? Do you know which foods you should never feed to your bird or which plants to stay away from?
Sadly, not many people know how to take care of their pet bird properly. All pet bird owners have to have a very strong level of commitment to their birds so that they can provide the best care possible to their birds. Every pet bird will need daily, as well as weekly maintenance, not to mention plenty of love and attention.
Your first priority in taking care of your pet bird is to consider the size and type of cage that he or she is in. You should always purchase the biggest cage that you can afford and make sure that your bird can turn around inside the cage without his wings and tail feathers touching any of the cage bars. Next, you should make sure that your bird has at least three different perches, each with a different diameter, and at least 5 different kinds of toys to play with. Your bird’s cage will need to be cleaned thoroughly on a weekly basis as well, so keep that in mind when choosing a cage.
No pet bird should ever be given chocolate or avocados to eat. You should also never feed your pet bird rhubarb leaves, alcohol, caffeine or salty or fatty foods. All these foods are extremely lethal to pet birds!
All pet birds require a diet that is mixed up of pellets, seeds, nuts, fruits, vegetables and grains. However, be careful not feed too many colored pellets to your bird as they actually contain sugared food coloring! Peanut butter and cooked eggs are great sources of protein that pet birds love to eat!
Just as you need exercise, your bird also needs adequate exercise as well. Allow your bird to play outside of his or her cage for at least two hours a day. You should have a separate play gym or tree stand that your bird can play on when he is outside of his cage. In order to properly socialize your pet bird, teach him to be comfortable wearing a harness so that he can go outside the house with you. With a harness, your bird will be able to be exposed to new people and new situations, which in turn, will help your bird to become very confident.
Before attempting to clip your birds wings and nails yourself, you should first ask your avian vet to show you how to do it properly. It will be much less stressful for your bird if you were to do your birds grooming yourself at home. Make sure that your pet bird has a concrete perch or a cuttlebone inside his cage to help him trim his beak on his own so that you will not have to worry about it.
Make sure that your bird always has fresh water and that his food bowl is never empty. All birds love to bathe themselves and so you should either provide your pet bird with a large water dish in which they can bath in, or use a spray bottle and gently mist him with water.
By following these few simple steps, you will be on the way to ensure that your pet bird lives a very happy and healthy life!
