Dear Parrot Lover,
If you are bringing a new baby bird home to join your family, or are adopting an older bird, there are a few basic supplies that you will need to get before your bird comes home with you.
The most obvious is the cage. When choosing one, make sure that it is large enough so that your new bird can flap his wings and turn around without touching either sides of the cage or his toys, also check that the bar spacing is narrow enough to prevent your bird from getting his head stuck between the bars. Another factor to consider when choosing a cage is to make sure that it is made of stainless steel or is powder coated.
Inside the cage, you will need to place at least three different types of perches with different diameters appropriate to your bird’s foot size, like branches, rope perch and concrete pedicure perch to help keep your bird’s nails trim.
Next you will need to choose appropriate sized toys. They should all be made from different colored materials and should be appropriate to your bird’s playing style as well as their size, i.e. if your bird is a chewer, then be sure to have plenty of destructible chew toys. Some birds prefer noisy toys whilst others like toys with feathers for preening. Larger, more intelligent parrots require puzzle toys to keep their minds busy. All birds should have foraging toys that enable them to search for treats. Once you know what types of toys your bird prefers you should stock up so that you can rotate them every week. Don’t forget to buy a swing too.
Your new bird will also need to have their own play area away from their cage. This can be a tabletop perch or a larger play gym. This should be easily removable so that you can take your bird with you into any room.
A carrier that is indestructible is also a necessity for any bird to have. Just make sure that you can drill a perch, toy and food and water cups to the inside of the carrier.
Also, make sure that you have the appropriate type of food for your bird prior to brining him home. Be sure to feed plenty of seeds, grains and vegetables too.
Other great items to have are a shower perch so that your bird can shower with you, an air cleaner to help you and your bird breathe better as some bird’s feather can emit a lot of dander, full-spectrum lighting, and bird safe disinfectants for cleaning your bird’s cage and toys.
