Shhhh….We’ve Got a Bird Secret to Share
Tuesday, February 26th, 2013Dear Parrot Lover,
Being able to have a well-trained parrot is the goal of every parrot owner. But getting there can sometimes be difficult. Keep these guidelines in mind when training your pet parrot:
- Parrot’s love learning new and fun tricks, so make sure you keep things enjoyable.
- Always be conscious of your voice when training your parrot. It is always best to speak in a soft and calm voice as that it holds your parrot’s attention better.
- Never shout or scream at your parrot as this will almost instantaneously break any trust bonds that you may have already established with him.
- Remember that parrot’s enjoy being a part of what they perceive as comedic antics. Use this to your advantage by training your parrot with actions, words and sounds that are fun-sounding for your parrot to want to try and mimic. However, the opposite is also true in this case: If you shout at your parrot or wag your finger in their face, they will simply think that you are playing a game and will want to play along by screaming as well, and maybe even bite your finger.
- The very first trick you should teach your parrot is to learn the ‘step up’ command. This can be done by gently pushing your index finger against your parrot’s breast bone and pushing back slightly while stating the ‘step up’ command. This will automatically compel your parrot to step forward so as to regain his balance. When he steps forward he will simply just then step onto your finger.
- Obviously you should never throw toys or other objects at your parrot’s cage, nor should you ever raise your hand to your parrot. All birds are extremely fragile and so can quickly become seriously injured. Physically abusing a parrot can also lead to psychological problems.
- Withholding your parrot’s food or water is never an acceptable form of punishment or training. Your parrot will not learn any faster this way and this is considered abuse and will certainly lead to serious physical and emotional damage.
- Instead reward your parrot with his favorite treat, praise or a head scratch whenever he at least attempts to try a new command, trick, or word. Every attempt, whether successful or not, should be rewarded. This is the only true way that your parrot will learn what is expected of him.
- Keep in mind that the way in which you interact with your parrot during your training sessions will always leave a lasting impression on your parrot.
