Safe and Fun Bird Toys
Wednesday, June 26th, 2013Dear Parrot Lover,
Parrots are very fun to watch, especially when they are playing and interacting with their toys. As a responsible and loving pet owner you have surely bought your parrot a myriad of toys.
But have you bought the best parrot toys possible? Were you aware that the bird toys that you buy for your parrot can actually have a direct and very serious impact on both your parrot’s physical and psychological health?
Unfortunately, this all very true!
What most new parrot owners do not know is that nearly every type of parrot has the mental capacity equivalent to that of a two to three year old child. And just like a toddler, your parrot continually needs to be both physically and mentally stimulated in order for them to be as happy and
as healthy as possible for their entire lifetime. It is easy to tell which parrots have not been properly stimulated, because those are typically the ones that are overly destructive. These parrots sometimes turn on themselves in frustration and become feather pluckers.
There are a lot of bird toys that are very unhealthy for your parrot to play with. Sadly, as the increase in parrot ownership rises around the globe, so does the amount of unscrupulous bird toy manufactures who think they can make a quick buck or two by creating and selling cheap bird toys. Unfortunately most of these bird toys are actually created using very harmful substances, such as using wood that comes from an apple tree. Such wood contains elements of cyanide, as does the seeds of apples, and prolonged exposure can be lethal to parrots. Other harmful parrot toys are made with harsh chemical dyes used to create bright, happy colors that will draw in both you and your parrot. Some
parrot toys have zinc bells or chains on them that could flake off in your parrot’s beak.
Remember that parrots are flock animals and will therefore not show any sign of being sick until it almost too late to get them to the veterinarian for help.
In order to make certain that your parrot has the best parrot toy possible, be sure to carefully read the label on the toy. Be on the lookout for any woods, dyes, chemicals or metals that are known to be harmful to parrots. Whenever possible, try to make your parrot’s toys on your own. That way you will always know what the components are made up of and that they are safe for your parrot.

I don’t want to scare you, but I want to make sure you really, truly feel safe with the toys you give your bird.
Here’s the thing. I did too, until the toys broke with little play and pieces of metal and plastic were available for the bird to eat! Luckily, none was ingested, but if it had been….
Bird toys can actually be harmful for our birds. They can break; they can be made of unsafe materials such as chemicals, zinc, lead, toxic wood stains, and even formaldehyde. Plus, many toys are made inexpensively outside of the country where there is absolutely no one watching how they are made or what goes into them.

There Are Safe Toys!
The good news is that there are plenty of safe toys available to you. They are not only non-toxic and fun, but they also simulate natural bird behavior. Have you ever watched your bird play with a toy he really likes? You’ll notice he likes to use his feet and his beak to investigate it. He likes to
pull at it, shred it, and in some cases, even destroy it.
Toys made of natural materials help encourage all of this natural behavior, which is great for your bird’s brain too. Safe natural materials include things like corn cobs, bamboo, leather, cuttle bone, and oyster shells.
