The Blue & Gold Macaws are one of the biggest parrots in the world. It is vivid in appearance with blue wings and tail, dark blue chin, golden underparts and a green forehead. Its beak is black, and very strong for crushing nuts. The naked face is white, turning pink in excited birds, and lined with small black feathers.
There is little variation in plumage across the range. Some Blue & Gold Macaws have a more orangey or butterscotch underside color, particularly on the breast. This was often seen in Trinidad birds and others of the Caribbean area, and appears to be due to environmental factors.

The Blue & Gold Macaw is a native resident of a vast region in South America, eastern Panama, western Colombia, western Ecuador and most of the Amazon Basin. The generally are forest and rainforest birds in their natural setting, often grouping in large flocks, and usually they are paired up with a mate or another Blue and Gold friend.

Blue & Gold Macaws are one of the larger Macaws. They are extremely intelligent and sociable companion parrots. They have beautiful brilliant coloring. They are as inquisitive as a kitten and playful as a puppy. They are also very good talkers and most have large vocabularies.
Blue & Gold Macaws make excellent family birds and most interact well with the entire family and enjoy interacting and showing off for everyone. Probably the most sociable and easiest to work with of the larger macaws. Most enjoy cuddling or laying on their back in your arms.
Well trained Blue and gold macaws make excellent pets. However, they need to be socialized from an early age. They are witty and easy to train. Sometimes aggressive, but usually they are quite adorable and a sight to look at. Smart and sensitive, the Blue & Gold Macaw will not be happy unless accepted as a full-fledged member of the household. The Blue & Gold Macaw can be very demanding and has a tendency to become aggressive or pluck. Well-trained Blue & Gold Macaws are a visual delight.
