Origin of the Scarlet Macaw

It is native to humid evergreen forests in the American tropics, from extreme eastern Mexico locally to Amazonian Peru and Brazil. Their natural habitat is in tropical Mexico to Bolivia. Formerly it ranged north to southern Tamaulipas. It can still be found on the island of Cobia.

The Central American scarlet macaw is found in Mexico, Guatemala and Belize, while the South American scarlet macaw is found in Columbia, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil.

  • Scarlet Macaw needs fresh branches for occupation and to chew on.
  • The Scarlet Macaw's strong bill is adapted not only to crush its food, but also as an additional limb for climbing.
  • The bill is hinged against the skull for independent movement, thus increasing its strength and flexibility.
  • These birds can be very aggressive and territorial while breeding.
